Hey Everyone,
Back when I had my Detail Shop,A big majority of my work was with Automotive Dealerships! one question I used to ask the Sales People was "What kind of paint is on the vehicle you are trying to sell?" "Is it a base Coat/Clear Coat?" To my amazement, the vast majority of people did not have a clue as to how to answer this!
Therefore, I wanted to pass this along to you. Their are two basic types of paint jobs on all cars today, and interestingly enough you can find both on the PT Cruiser line up. The first type of paint is Non Clear Coat. This type of paint is usually a Urathane base which has a good thickness, and is very durable! This is most often used on solid non metallic colors like White, or Black.
The other type of paint is what is known as Base Coat/Clear Coat, or Two Stage paint job. This is more commonly used for darker, richer, or more vibrant colors, or iif the paint is a Metallic, or Pearlecent type of finish. Dream Cruiser Orange, or Electric Blue are prime examples of Base Coat Clear Coat Paint! The process uses a paper thin color coat of Acrylic Enamel, and then a thicker coat of Clear Acrylic Urethane which is very resilient, and acts as a clear protective shield over a delicate under layer.
The way you can tell the difference is by taking a white Terry Cloth Towel, fold it into four, and apply a small amount of car wax to one side if the rag. Rub the wax into a small area on your paint, flip the towel, and buff the exess wax off. If you pick up any color transfer onto your towel, your paint is Not Clear Coat. If you do not pick up any color transfer onto your towel, then your paint Is Base Coat Clear Coat.
When it comes to Automotive Detailing, Each type of paint has different methods to produce good results! Please be sure to check in our Detailing Guide for more information on this subject!
Till next time, Take it easy, and Cruise Safe!
