Hey their Everyone,
I have seen this question come up several times on other Forums, and figured it might be a good bit of info to post up in here in case anyone would like to try to work on this Mod for their ride.
While I'm really more into the older Console as I think the rounder lines fit the car better, their are still many people who like the thought of having that extra storage from the newer Console in their older PT. It can, and has been one before, and is actually fairly simple to pull off with just a few modifications.
Here is the process.
Disconnect the battery’s negative cable.
Set the emergency brake.
Remove both front seats – there are 4 bolts holding each one in. You may have an electrical harness or two as well depending on the year and the seat options.
Remove the center console by removing the 4 screws located in the 2 front & the 2 rear drink holders. Unplug the rear window switches at the rear of the console and the lighter socket at the front.
There are 3 to 4 cuts that you have to make to the 2006 console to make it fit depending on which driver’s seat you have installed :
A) trim the plastic in the emergency brake lever opening so that the opening is as long as the slot available. The 2006 console prevented my 2004 brake lever from going all the way down. I cut the console with a dremel tool and cleaned up the opening with a razor knife.
B) remove the plastic standoffs that surround the screw holes from the underside of the console. These standoffs hold the console too high in the air and must be removed. They are on the underside so the cut does not have to be pretty.
C) make a cut along the top of both sides of the 2006 center console’s front portion. Don’t make the cut all the way to the front or it will be seen when the console is installed. The 2006 console is taller in the front then the 2004 console. You have to spread the front and push it underneath the lower dash piece of the PT. These 2 cuts enable the console front to squeeze underneath the dash and if done right are not seen at all.
D) may not be necessary for every model of PT. I had the adjustable lumbar lever and needed to cut out an area inside the console for the lumbar lever to sit. I removed the lumbar lever handle leaving just a plastic spline sticking out of the seat upholstery. The opening may be different for each PT too because you may move your seat more then I do. To determine the cutout size, I put the console in the car with the driver’s seat in place and used a pencil to mark the extent of the spline’s contact with the console side. That is what I cut out. I used a dremel tool and cleaned up the opening with a razor knife.
And here are a few other pictures of the Console in the car to give you a better idea of what it looks like.
